About Heroes Rise Street Dance Academy
The Heroes Rise Street Dance Academy is a black-owned business and is Cincinnati’s only studio dedicated to teaching Black Vernacular Dances known as the American Street Dances.
Julius Jenkins founded the Academy to provide authentic black dance representation in Cincinnati. It is also a goal to uphold black dancers’ past, present, and inevitable future contributions to American and World dance cultures.
Evolution of Street Dance
The Black Vernacular Dance date back as far as the early 1900s. Starting with Vernacular Jazz dances like Tap dance, the Apple jack, Mashed potatoes, Charleston, and the Lindy Hop. Then into Boogaloo in the 60s, to Locking, Popping, and Breaking in the 70s. Hip-hop and House in the last 80s/early 90s, all the way to Chicago Footworking, Memphis Jookin, and Krump in the early 2000s. Street dance history is American Dance history.
There are opportunities available today for black Vernacular dancers that didn’t exist 20 yrs ago. With Breaking featured in the 2024 Paris Olympics, The Heroes Rise Street Dance Academy looks to create a place where people, especially black youth, can learn and practice original street-style dances.
Every Instagram and TikTok dance challenge that generates millions of dollars for content creators, recording artists, and corporations are all variations of street dances created by black youth. Few people realize that young black people created all-American Street Dances.
Heroes Rise Dance Instruction
The instructors of Heroes Rise each have over a decade of experience in a specialized style. That’s over 100 collectives of first-hand knowledge of these dance styles. All of them can provide education on fundamental movements and expand on the associated history and cultures.
Dance instruction for styles including Hip-Hop, Breaking, Popping, Locking, House, Vogue, and more. Through educating dancers in these dance styles, the academy hopes that more career opportunities are created for non-classically trained dancers.
Heroes Rise Location
Currently, the academy shares a location with a community partner, Citizens of the World Charter School, at 4324 Homer Avenue in Cincinnati, Ohio.
