Smith & Hannon Bookstore is a Black-owned bookstore in Over the Rhine. Owned by a teacher of over thirty years, Joyce Smith, the book shop offers a variety of new and used books and holiday items. Founded in 2003, Smith & Hannon Bookstore provides a place for the African American community to gather and embrace African American literature and authors.
After being in Cincinnati’s National Underground Railroad Freedom Center for several years, this Cincinnati Black-owned bookstore relocated to OTR.

Smith & Hannon additionally offers seasonal items. The OTR book shop houses products celebrating Christmas and Kwanzaa through holiday cards, picture books and more. The Black-owned literature boutique also merchandises rare book collections not found in many other locations. These rare collections are unique, original press and limited issue. Smith & Hannon celebrates Black authors through the vast wares of African American history, fiction, children’s books and more.
About the Bookstore
Smith & Hannon Bookstore was established in 2003 with one mission: to bring an authentic, high-quality bookstore in the Cincinnati area specializing in literary works of African American and local authors. The African American bookseller has a deep passion for Black books which continues to drive their operation. Smith & Hannon is the only Black-owned bookstore in the Cincinnati metropolitan area.
This Black-owned book shop focuses on spotlighting African American authors. Additionally, Smith & Hannon feature various authors and genres. The book shop prides itself on giving a superior shopping experience for every customer. The Cincinnati book company also hosts book signings and storytellers. Oprah’s List of Black-Owned bookstores also featured the OTR literature shop.
