The Cincinnati Herald is a Black-owned newspaper published each Wednesday by Sesh Communications located in the Avondale neighborhood.
The Cincinnati Herald is an award-winning newspaper. Established in August of 1955, The Cincinnati Herald is the longest running African American newspaper in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Herald’s primary purpose as a newspaper is to take the general news as it relates to the black community and tell what that really means for the community.
The Herald offers daily articles to keep people informed on the latest news, community events, pop culture, and more. They also have a YouTube channel known as the Herald TV if you prefer to watch your news instead of reading it. The YouTube channel doesn’t offer just news. It also provides several different series with many episodes such as The Influencer, Lit 513, and Let’s Talk Cincy.
The Herald was founded in 1955 by Gerald Porter. When Porter died in 1963, his wife Marjorie Parham assumed control of the paper. In 1996, Parham sold the paper to Sesh Communications, a partnership between Eric Kearney, Jan-Michele Lemon, Wilton Blake, and Ronda Gooden.
“The Cincinnati Herald is a voice for all African American people so there isn’t just one viewpoint,” says Kearney. “So, people get upset and every few years somebody boycotts us because they’re mad about something in the paper.”
“That is really the mission of African American newspapers going back to the 1800’s the point was to have a means of advocating for the rights of African American people and also have a way of talking about ourselves, telling our own stories.”
