This summer, every second Thursday of each month Open Mic Night of spoken word and poetry will be in Findlay Market’s Biergarten. The events will feature local poets from Louder Than A Bomb and from around the city including Cincinnati’s very own Poet Laureate, Manuel Iris (who performs July 11). Mr. Iris is a poet, essay writer, translator, and an educator who has lived in Cincinnati since 2008.

This event is FREE and open to the public. This is a family-friendly event. There are still openings to perform.

Mr. Iris received the National Award of Poetry Merida (Mexico, 2009) for his book Notebook of Dreams (Cuaderno de los sueños), and the Regional Award of Poetry Rodulfo Figueroa for his book The Disguises of Fire (Los disfraces del fuego) in 2015. This book was considered one of the 10 best poetry books of the year by the newspaper El Norte in Mexico, and was a finalist of the prestigious Latin-American award for published books “Ciudad de la lira” in Cuenca, Ecuador. Iris also coauthored, along with Brazilian poet Floriano Martins, the poetry book Overnight Medley (Brazil, 2014).

Recently, three different anthologies of his poetic work were published: The Naked Light (La luz desnuda), in Venezuela; Before the Mystery (Frente al misterio) in El Salvador, and his first bilingual book; Traducir el silencio/Translating Silence, published in New York.

An active member of Cincinnati’s poetic scene, Mr. Iris has participated in poetry readings in cultural venues like Chase Public and the Mercantile Library. He is also a member of the Greater Cincinnati Writers League.
