Collective Impact: Females Joining Forces Through May 29
Kennedy Heights Arts Center
The Kennedy Heights Art Center is pleased to announce the group exhibition Collective Impact: Females Joining Forces, focusing on the combined power of women and their collaborative creativity.
Curated by Mallory Feltz, this show features past work and newly created pieces by seven Cincinnati-based female artist collectives: Art for Artists, ART HAGS, Bombshells of Cincinnati, LOOK, Maidens of the Cosmic Body Running, PhotograpHERS, and Pull Club.
On view through May 29, 2021, artworks will be installed inside the Kennedy Gallery and also outside on the grounds, located at 6546 Montgomery Road, Cincinnati, OH 45213. The exhibition sponsor is LasikPlus.
Throughout history, women have joined forces to combat gender-based discrimination, redefine their roles in society, lift each other up in safe spaces, and amplify their voices. The artists in this exhibition all find the draw to collaborate and use their diverse perspectives to highlight various themes, inspire important discussions in our region, and comment on the contemporary female experience.
Art for Artists will display selected older works alongside newer creations produced by members last year, including “Sequestered Self-Portraits…..Women in Masks” inspired by the pandemic and “The Walk,” a series of elaborately decorated shoes that highlight all the influential women that have come before us on our journey to equal rights.
ART HAGS, a sisterhood that makes art rooted in inclusivity, recognition, and reclamation, will use a multidisciplinary approach to explore and dissect the concept of “women’s work” and the historical expectations and consequences of swallowing injustice.
Bombshells of Cincinnati will adorn a room in the gallery with new artworks created by expert fiber artists complemented with costume artifacts and a video of past projects, alongside inspirational and whimsical yarn bombings on the front porch and large tree, spreading the joy and adventure of non-permanent graffiti.
Exploring themes of female friendship and image through garments and poetry, and consumption and commercialization through the body, food, and presentation, LOOK will display two new interactive works.
Maidens of the Cosmic Body Running will present an installation of various elements, including poetry accompanied by a new video work, creating a transformative environment rooted in Kennedy Heights history.
The recently formed collective PhotograpHERS will display photographic works reflecting the process and products of working, thinking, and image-making together.
Pull Club will utilize KHAC’s Outdoor Gallery to display reproductions of their screen prints of previous protest posters along with newly developed designs for this show and will be a featured vendor in KHAC’s Art Shop.
Informational panels on pivotal international female artist collectives, past and present, will link Cincinnati to the larger art historical movement of females joining forces to make their voices heard. An outdoor artist talk is also being organized, with more information forthcoming.
Gallery hours are Wednesday – Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be special extended hours for opening day on April 10th from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. More information and free timed-entry tickets are available.
