Jubilation! Ambassadors on a Sacred Journey Exhibit
January 19 – June 21
Freedom Center
Included with general admission

See Jubilation! Ambassadors on a Sacred Journey at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center through June 21.
Jubilation! Ambassadors on a Sacred Journey celebrates the history, accomplishments, and legacies of the Fisk Jubilee Singers®. The exhibition takes visitors on a journey as they become familiar with the individuals and music of this world-renowned ensemble group, which introduced African American spirituals to the world.
Jubilation! presents this story in four thematic chapters:
- AFRICA TO AMERICA – Explores the origins of spirituals rooted in African musical traditions and their creation during enslavement.
- LEARNING AND FREEDOM – A look at the noble aspirations and challenges faced by Fisk University faculty, staff, and students.
- REKINDLING THE SPIRITUALS– Shows how later Fisk troupes transformed the spirituals for global audiences.
- FORWARD IN FAITH – Details the continuing legacy and ongoing impact of the Fisk Jubilee Singers, who are still active today.
The highlight of the exhibit is a circular space featuring historical recordings and a vibrant light display, immersing audiences in the singers’ legacy. The exhibition also features Ambassador Panels, which share personal stories from the original group members, and interactive elements to bring the content to life for visitors of all ages.
This exhibit not only honors the Fisk Jubilee Singers’ historic contributions and their roles as ambassadors of Fisk University, a historically Black university, but it also emphasizes their lasting influence on American music and culture. Jubilation! celebrates their work as pioneers who used music as a tool for resilience, empowerment, and social change.
Jubilation! Ambassadors on a Sacred Journey originated at the National Museum of African American Music in Nashville, Tennessee. This project was made possible with the support of the Lilly Endowment Inc., Fisk University, and the Fisk Jubilee Singers.
