the afrofuturist salon

Attend The Afrofuturist Salon at Artsville on May 7.

Step into the vibrant universe of Lalovavi, Cincinnati Opera’s bold, new Afrofuturist opera, during an elevated after-work evening of hair, art, music, and creative expression at Artsville. The Afrofuturist Salon brings together cultural innovators, creative voices, and curious minds for cocktails, connection, and conversation inspired by Afrofuturism and the power of hair, style, identity, storytelling, and legacy.

The evening features a vibrant live conversation with Lalovavi librettist Tifara Brown; wig designer Tiara Jones; Cassandra Jones, UC Assistant Professor of Africana Studies; and Shabrina Monet, loctician, makeup artist, barber, and hair‑show curator. Together, they explore the rich intersections of Black futurism, beauty, storytelling, and self‑expression. The experience flows into a high-energy DJ set with spoken word and remixes inspired by Lalovavi, plus raffles, atmosphere, and celebration.

  • 6:30 p.m. – Cash bar, hair show & networking
  • 7 p.m. – Panel discussion
  • 8:15 p.m. – DJ battle and dancing
