The Greenwich jazz concerts are amongst the best in the city. Don’t miss Charlie Young & The Phil Degreg Trio.
The Greenwich is honored to host a performance featuring the esteemed jazz saxophonist Charlie Young and Cincinnati’s own Phil DeGreg Trio. Mr. Young, a native of Norfolk, Virginia, is the quintessential artist’s artist, perhaps better known to jazz performers than he is to audiences. His journey began in one of Norfolk’s housing projects and has led him to being the Professor of Jazz saxophone at Howard University for the past 20 years and recently appointed as the Coordinator of Jazz Studies.
Admission to this event is $10 at the door. Each admission includes complimentary appetizers. The show will begin at 8:30 p.m.
Fans can hear this prodigious talent on more than 30 recordings, including his own release “So Long Ago”— but the best place to hear him on this particular evening with will be at The Greenwich:
Charlie Young (saxophone)
Phil DeGreg (piano)
Aaron Jacobs (bass)
John Taylor (drums)
Charlie has performed and recorded with the National Symphony Orchestra, US Navy Band, the Count Basie Orchestra as well as the Seattle Symphony Orchestra. In 1988 he was recruited to be a member of the Duke Ellington Orchestra where he is now the lead saxophonist and occasional conductor. In 2013 Young was appointed Artistic Director and Conductor of the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra – the national jazz orchestra of the United States.
Both a superb section player and spectacular soloist, Charlie has traveled all over the world presenting jazz clinics and classes in jazz and classical saxophone. He has shared the stage with musical icons from Ella Fitzgerald to Stevie Wonder, Clark Terry and Quincy Jones – performing in such hallowed venues as London’s Royal Albert Hall and New York’s Carnegie Hall.
Charlie is a recognized clinician in the field of jazz education as well as in classical and jazz saxophone performance. Clinic presentations in Brazil, Venezuela, Chile, Egypt, and South Africa and throughout the United States, Europe and Japan have earned Mr. Young a stellar reputation among the most respected in music and education.
