In the bleak and savage moors, there live two sisters. The eldest commands the house, leaving the youngest trapped in her shadow. But when a governess arrives, lies are revealed, and loyalties shift — until someone reaches her breaking point.
The governess has come at the invitation of the house’s master — a man of sensitivity and romantic letters who has captured her heart entirely. There is only one problem: he’s nowhere to be found. What she discovers instead is a household teeming with secrets, a maid who answers to different names in different rooms, a dog conducting his own quietly philosophical interior life, and two sisters whose hunger for love and power has curdled into something far more dangerous.
Inspired by the lives and works of the Brontë sisters — Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, the fog, the obsession, the barely-contained wildness of it all — Jen Silverman’s The Moors gleefully seizes those beloved Victorian tropes and twists them into something entirely its own. It is a dark comedy, a deranged family drama, a tender love story, a delicious Victorian melodrama, and a gothic feminist thriller all in one.
Silverman herself insists this is not a period piece — it’s a play about this exact moment in time. Drop the corsets and the candlelight if you like. The loneliness, the longing, and the danger are entirely contemporary.
