Virtual College PREP Workshop
November 14, 2020 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm
17th Annual College PREP Workshop Goes Virtual
According to demos.org, at the end of the 2016 school year, African American students comprised 16 percent of high school graduates in the United States. Still, only 5 percent of those students enrolled in large, selective public colleges.
Preparing high school students for college is traditionally guided by guidance counselors and family members. Unfortunately, these options are not always available to African American students, as many high schools have significantly reduced the guidance counselor-per-student ratio or eliminated these positions. Additionally, many African American students are often a first-generation college student with little exposure to the college preparatory processes.
These disparities, coupled with multiple variations of online, in-person and blended school choices caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, make it even more challenging for disparate high school students to successfully navigate the college preparation, selection, admission and enrollment processes.
Aiding high school students to fulfill their dreams of attending an accredited college or university is what the Cincinnati Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the Beta Iota Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. aim to do at the 17th Annual, and first Virtual, Free College PREP Workshop.
Although COVID-19 has forced the 2020 workshop into a virtual event, the need of the students and the importance of the information are no less significant. High school students and their parents will experience the same high-quality workshops to prepare for higher education.
The goals of this workshop are to prepare students in grades 9-11 academically for the college acceptance process and prepare 12th-graders for the life of a college student. Attendees will learn more about standardized tests, college life and preparing for freshman year.
Topics for the 17th Annual Free College Prep Workshop will include maintaining mental health, deciding which tests are necessary for admissions, reviewing the effect of social media and the college experience. Organizers welcome students in grades 9 through 12 and their parents in the Cincinnati area and across the United States to join this informative and engaging virtual training.
As a bonus, Cincinnati-area high school seniors will have a chance to be awarded a $500 scholarship if they meet specific requirements. The scholarship will be sent directly to the institution where the Cincinnati-area student enrolls in fall 2021. All participants will have a chance to win gift cards.
The registration deadline is Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2020. Registrants will receive a link to access the workshop. For more information, email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
