Maintenance Worker I
Job Description
An entry-level maintenance worker who reports to the Assistant Public Works Director and receives daily assignments consisting of general maintenance labor and operation of light-duty equipment.
Essential Functions
- Performs general maintenance work on streets, traffic signs, storm sewers, right-of-way clean-up and mowing, and City parks.
- May operate dump trucks with snow plows, salt spreaders, and tractors with end loaders as weather necessitates.
- May operate a tractor with mowing attachments.
- Performs daily preventive maintenance on equipment he/she is to operate.
- Performs related work and other duties as required and assigned.
Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- General knowledge of construction procedures concerning street maintenance and repair.
- Thorough knowledge of the State laws about the operation of motor vehicles on the highways.
- The necessary knowledge is needed to perform routine maintenance on the equipment he/she is operating.
- Skill and care in the operation of motor vehicles.
- Knowledge of safety rules and regulations.
- Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods and sometimes under adverse weather or working conditions.
- Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds with no restrictions.
- Ability to respond to emergency situations at any time, day or night, with no restrictions.
Minimum Required Experience and Training
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to read maintenance instructions and complete simple forms.
- Must have the ability to obtain a valid Commercial Driver’s License-Class B from the State of Ohio within one year of hire. The City will pay and/or train the employee if needed.
- Ability to drive at night with no restrictions.
- Must be able to be insured and remain insurable by the City’s insurance carrier if the position requires driving.
The City may either select or waive certain certification requirements, based upon the needs of the City, in certain disciplines related to this position.
