Learn about Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church
Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church is a historic landmark that hosted a significant anti-slavery convention in May of 1841 for Hamilton County. Built in 1829, this pillar of faith no longer stands, and now the grounds of 7615 Hamilton Avenue are home to the Mt. Healthy Schools administration building.
Here, Jonathan Blanchard, a theologian, Presbyterian Minister, and President of Knox Wheaton Colleges, delivered an impassioned address on the principles of abolition. Blanchard was well-known for his sermons in Black churches throughout Cincinnati.

Nathan Hastings, benefactor for the church and ardent abolitionist and operative on the Underground Railroad, lived next door to the church. His proximity likely helped those seeking freedom by linking downtown Cincinnati to the sanctuary offered in Mt. Pleasant.
