Ohio Cribs for Kids: Ensuring Safe and Secure Sleep for Every Baby

Ohio Cribs for Kids is an initiative that helps Cincinnati families in need create safe sleep environments for infants. By providing free cribs and educational resources, this program aims to reduce the number of preventable sleep-related deaths in infants. With multiple safe sleep resources, Cincinnati families can ensure each baby rests safely.

Infant sleep safety is essential, but communities facing health disparities may lack the proper resources to create safe sleep environments. Ohio health programs like Cribs for Kids address these issues and provide resources to underserved communities. These programs ensure everyone in Cincinnati has access to better health resources.

What is the Ohio Cribs for Kids Safe Sleep Program?

The Cribs for Kids/Safe Sleep Program aims to decrease Ohio’s infant mortality rate by ensuring infants have a safe sleep environment, and families receive education about safe sleep practices. This goal is accomplished by funding organizations that promote safe sleep practices and distributing cribs to eligible families in their counties.

What are the eligibility requirements?

Program eligibility requirements include:

  • Mother must be at least 32 weeks pregnant or have an infant less than one year old.
  • Must be low income, which is defined as less than 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Level.
  • Caregivers, including non-custodial grandparents, are eligible.
  • Twins and multiple births are eligible.
  • Funded agencies will determine if two cribs will be provided to parents residing in separate homes.

Why does infant sleep safety matter?

Having a safe sleep environment is essential in the prevention of SIDS, also known as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. The CDC recommends the following to create a safe sleep environment

  • Place the baby on their back to sleep—for both naps and bedtime.
  • Use a firm, flat (not at an angle or inclined) sleep surface. For example, infants should sleep on a firm mattress in a safety-approved crib, covered by a fitted sheet.
  • Keep your baby’s sleep area (for example, a crib or bassinet) in the same room where you sleep, ideally until your baby is at least 6 months old. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends co-sleeping, sleeping close to newborns and infants. This practice differs from bed-sharing, where parents sleep with the baby in the same bed, which is not recommended.
  • Ensure babies are not sleeping with soft bedding, such as blankets, pillows, bumper pads, and soft toys. Baby sleep areas should only include safety-approved cribs, mattresses, and fitted sheets.
  • Do not cover your baby’s head or allow your baby to get too hot. Signs your baby may be getting too hot include sweating or their chest feeling hot.

By sleeping in a crib, infants have a reduced risk of premature death. According to the CDC, in 2022, there were 1,040 deaths from accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed. Keep infants safe while asleep and prevent unsafe environments.
