Habesha Ethiopian Restaurant is a Black-owned East African food spot in Western Hills on Cincinnati’s west side, just off Glenway Ave near Delhi, Westwood, and West Price Hill. The Restaurant, owned by African American chef, Dawit Zeleke, serves Ethiopian cuisine so traditional that you’re meant to eat it with your hands.
Habesha Ethiopian Restaurant offers orders ahead and delivery using apps such as Grub Hub and Seamless. Walking into Habesha Restaurant and Cafe feels like entering a long-lost relative’s home. A mounted TV plays East African music videos, a miniature stage hosts musicians on Saturday nights, and billiard balls click a hidden back room. It’s a friendly vibe cultivated by owner Dawit Zeleke, who moved to Cincinnati from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s capital city, 15 years ago, opening Habesha in 2015.
Ethiopian cuisine is not meant to be eaten alone. The best place to start for a large group will be the mahberawi. A hearty combo platter includes helpings of pickled vegetables, lentils, collard greens, and the like served on injera. It’s filling enough for two and a great appetizer for four. From there, you’ll go to the tibs section of the menu. Tibs is a stir fry-like stew made with beef, lamb, or goat. The safest choice will be the derek tibs, beef, onion, and peppers sautéed in herbed butter. Habesha also offers traditional vegetarian options, so there’s something for everyone.
