About The Manhattans

The Manhattans were one of the classic R&B vocal groups who achieved incredible career longevity by adapting their style to fit changing times. Formed in 1962 in Jersey City, New Jersey, the group evolved from a doo wop-influenced R&B quintet into one of the premier smooth soul vocal groups of the 1970s. Following the passing of original lead singer George “Smitty” Smith, Gerald Alston joined the group, helping lead them into their most successful era.

The Manhattans scored major hits with “There’s No Me Without You,” “One Life to Live,” “Hurt,” and their signature song, “Kiss and Say Goodbye.” Released in 1976, “Kiss and Say Goodbye” became the second platinum single in history and their first No. 1 hit on both the R&B and pop charts. The group continued its success with favorites including “I Kinda Miss You,” “Am I Losing You,” and the Grammy-winning, gold-certified hit “Shining Star.”

For more than six decades, The Manhattans have remained one of R&B’s most beloved vocal groups. Their signature harmonies, timeless soul ballads, and enduring catalog continue to captivate audiences around the world.
