Ensure that your children always wear helmets when biking.
Follow these tips to have a fun, safe spring
With temperatures rising and daylight lasting longer in the evenings, children and families are getting outside more. By taking the following precautions recommended by Cincinnati Children’s Comprehensive Children’s Injury Center, you and your family can stay safe throughout the spring.
At the playground
- Ensure that playground equipment is age-appropriate and properly maintained. Be sure there is adequate soft surfacing under the equipment and look for loose or broken screws on the equipment.
- Remove bike helmets and hood drawstrings from all children’s outerwear, and be sure your child wears shoes while playing
- Actively supervise children on playgrounds.
- Teach children proper playground behavior: no pushing, shoving or crowding.
- Keep toddlers under age 5 in a separate play area, fenced off from equipment designed for bigger kids.
On the bike
- Always supervise your children.
- Never allow children to ride in the street or after dark.
- Don’t let children wear long or loose clothing, including dresses and wide-legged pants, that can get caught in bike chains or wheel spokes.
- Ensure that your child’s helmet fits well and is worn during every ride.
- Be sure your child’s tricycle or bicycle is the right size for them and that your child can use the brakes correctly.
