Venture to India, the world’s most populous country, and delve into its rich culture with Many Colors of India. Eastern classical music and Western classical music related to India’s history meet in this collaboration with members of the Indian community. With the help of artistic advisor and local composer Kanniks Kannikeswaran, this orchestral exploration offers a peek into India’s fascinating and colorful culture, a tabla player, Indian dancers, and the Greater Cincinnati Indian Community Choir.

About the Greater Cincinnati Indian Community Choir
Founded in 1994 by Dr. Kanniks Kannikeswaran, the Greater Cincinnati Indian Community Choir (Shanti Choir) features community singers of Indian origin. The group’s repertoire is based on Classical Indian Ragas, with lyrics mainly in the Sanskrit language sourced primarily from ancient classics—clothed in choral polyphony.

Summermusik is an independent ensemble of 32 professional musicians that is widely recognized as one of the leading performing arts organizations in the Greater Cincinnati region.

See the Summermusik (Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra) 50th Anniversary Festival from July 31 to August 24. This year’s events seek to bring people from different cultural worlds together.
Summermusik will again offer three different concert experiences:
- Mainstage full chamber orchestra performances at the School for Creative & Performing Arts
- A Little Afternoon Musik Sunday matinee concerts at local churches and schools

If you have listened closely, you will have noticed that the old neon signs exhibited at the museum have a ‘hum’ to them. Using this as a springboard, the string quartet performs selections that incorporate or mimic this electrical sound to create an atmospheric experience for the audience.

Enjoy a performance of 10-time Emmy-winning composer John Henry Kreitler’s second symphony—his final oeuvre, which he composed right before his passing in January 2024 to celebrate the Chamber Orchestra’s 50th anniversary. The program also features works inspired by the greatest bard of all—William Shakespeare- and reads from members of the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company.

Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy Lindner Theatre (Highpoint)
Explore the connection of Indian ragas to the music of Bach and Beethoven with music from Mumbai’s Hindi cinema, or ‘Bollywood,’ works by local composer Kanniks Kannikeswaran, and arrangements of traditional Indian music by Vidita Kanniks. Hindi cinema is one of the world’s largest centers for film production, selling over 340 million tickets in India in 2019.

Starring Dev Patel, Rooney Mara, Nicole Kidman, and David Wenham, this 2016 biographical drama tells the life story of Saroo. As a five-year-old, Saroo unwittingly winds up in Calcutta. Not understanding
the local Bengali language, he begins to wander Calcutta’s streets before being placed in an orphanage.
Eventually, he is adopted by an Australian couple and, 20 years later, begins to trace his roots to find his biological family. During the process, Saroo discovers that his real name is ‘Sheru,’ meaning ‘Lion’.
The film earned six Oscar nominations at the 89th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Patel), Best Supporting Actress (Kidman), and Best Adapted Screenplay. The film is rated PG-13.

As part of Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra’s 10th annual Summermusik Festival, jazz vocalist Mandy Gaines will perform sets from The Great American Songbook with a string quartet and rhythm section. The Great American Songbook is not an actual book but a loosely defined canon of significant 20th-century American jazz standards, popular songs, and show tunes.

Celebrate 200 years of Ludwig’s Ninth, 50 years of the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, ten years of the Summermusik festival, and one final surprise. To close the festival, the orchestra will be spotlighted with a performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 (the work’s 200th Anniversary). Cora’s Cakery will provide a post-concert reception.
