About The Pharcyde

An influential alternative rap group from South Central Los Angeles, The Pharcyde originally formed in the early 1990s and became known for their playful lyricism, jazz-influenced production, and offbeat approach to hip-hop. The group’s early members included Tre Hardson (“Slimkid3”), Derrick Stewart (“Fatlip”), Imani Wilcox, and Romye Robinson (“Bootie Brown”). Hardson, Wilcox, and Robinson were dancers and choreographers who met on the L.A. underground club circuit in the late ’80s and later appeared as dancers on In Living Color.

Under the guidance of music educator Reggie Andrews, the group learned about the music industry and the process of recording an album before signing with Delicious Vinyl in 1991. Their eccentric debut album, Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde (1992), went gold and helped establish them as one of alternative hip-hop’s most distinctive acts. They followed with Labcabincalifornia, and gained further recognition touring with artists including De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest, as well as appearing at Lollapalooza.

Over the years, The Pharcyde’s lineup has evolved, but their influence on alternative and jazz-inspired hip-hop remains significant, with classic releases such as Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde continuing to resonate with fans around the world.
