Juvenile Corrections Officer

What we are looking for

  • Provide safe and secure supervision and care to youth in a secure juvenile detention.
  • Serve as a role model, mentor, and guide.
  • Work as part of a team to support positive and healthy youth development.
  • Manage conflict and youth behavior safely, including using de-escalation and physical intervention techniques as necessary.
  • Provide structure and engage youth in pro-social activities and behaviors.
  • Support youth in developing new social, academic, and vocational skills and interests.
  • Receive valuable training on building healthy relationships with youth and crisis prevention and management.

 

Job Requirements (Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification)

  • High school diploma or GED or have at least one year of full-time equivalent paid or volunteer experience directly providing care to children.
  • Physically participate in and complete all required in-service training, including, but not limited to, CPR, First Aid, Response to Resistance techniques, etc.
  • Must be age 21 or older.
  • Must pass a background screening process.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • One year of work experience working with delinquent youth in the supervision of activities.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and auto liability insurance is preferred.
  • Diversion, Equity, and Inclusion experience.

 

Job Duties

  • Role model healthy and respectful interpersonal interactions.
  • Encourage and provide residents with a safe and secure environment by fostering community and utilizing active behavior management.
  • Monitors residents, assuring safety and well-being consistent with the assessed risk level.
  • Helps create and maintain strong morale and a feeling of belonging in their team.
  • Educates youth on how to maintain the unit and living areas clean and orderly by teaching skills and supervising residents on work details and recreation activities in the pod and the gym.
  • Escorts new admissions around the unit and advises residents of their room assignments and responsibilities.
  • Refers to residents for Psychology evaluations and handles residents’ daily medical requests confidentially.
  • Counsels for crisis intervention on an individual or group basis.
  • Provides verbal and written assessment of residents’ behavior.
  • Must be physically able to provide individual and group control monitoring of residents’ behavior.

  • Maturity encourages youth to better themselves and have healthy interactions in this unique environment.
  • Ability to organize Unit activities according to established priorities; use crisis intervention counseling skills to resolve situations.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of residents’ healthcare issues.
  • Interpersonal skills requiring judgment and tact to communicate effectively with residents who are engaged in acting out behavior; ability to work as a team with coworkers.
  • Ability to physically participate in training and use approved physical intervention techniques such as blocks for personal protection, body hold techniques, arm hold techniques, and takedowns, when necessary; must be active and ambulatory to respond to the need for supervision, monitoring, and behavior management.
  • Ability to observe, identify, and closely monitor unusual or escalating behavior patterns and provide auditory and visual monitoring of youth in assigned rooms.

 

Special Working Conditions

• Employees work indoors and are protected from weather conditions or contaminants, but not necessarily occasional temperature changes.
• Secure correctional facility with some exposure to unruly and, at times, out-of-control resident populations.
